Shehu Sani Praises Tinubu: ‘No President Has Been This Ready To Take The Bull By The Horns
Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as his willingness to take bold and difficult decisions in the interest of Nigeria’s long-term development.
Sani made the remarks during an interview on TVC’s This Morning programme while discussing the “State of the Nation Ahead of the 2027 Elections.”
According to the former senator, Tinubu is the first Nigerian president in recent years who has demonstrated a willingness to confront the country’s challenges directly, even when doing so could negatively affect his political popularity.
Sani argued that previous administrations largely focused on managing existing problems rather than taking decisive measures capable of producing long-term solutions.
He said Tinubu appeared more concerned about Nigeria’s future than preserving his political goodwill.
“Most of the presidents for years have tried to manage our problems and managing problems in that fashion as to avoid taking decisive actions that would be in the best interest of the future of the country.”
Sani said Tinubu had shown a readiness to “take the bull by the horn” by introducing policies that could potentially cost him political support.
“This is the first time that we have a President who is ready to take the bull by the horn by taking decisions and implementing policies that have the possibility of sweeping power under his feet,” he said.
‘Tinubu Is Putting Nigeria’s Future First’
The former senator maintained that countries that eventually achieved significant economic and social progress had, at certain points in their histories, taken difficult decisions that were initially unpopular.
He said Tinubu’s approach suggested that the President was prioritising the country’s future over immediate political gains.
Sani explained that politicians in power often seek to preserve their popularity by avoiding decisions that could generate public resentment.
However, he said Tinubu had chosen a different path by implementing reforms despite the political consequences.
“It’s clear that the President is more interested in the future of this country than his own political goodwill because as a politician, if you are in power, most people think let them do whatever they can to ensure that they are being loved and appreciated by people while preserving their own political peace.”
According to Sani, the reforms introduced by Tinubu have been painful and have contributed to growing dissatisfaction among Nigerians.
“This is the one who is taking the bull by the horn and implementing painful reforms that have generated issues in the country and it’s one of the reasons why people are waking up against him,” he said.
Sani, however, argued that unpopular reforms could eventually produce significant benefits if properly implemented.
He cited Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, Thailand and South Korea as examples of countries that had taken difficult decisions at critical points in their development.
“At a certain point in the history of the nation decisions have to be taken – it may not be popular, it may come with pains and sacrifice but it has a far reaching benefit for the future of the nation,” he added.
