He Was Reacting To Many Things’ — Rufai Gives Damning Assessment Of Adeleke’s Leadership
Nigerian journalist Rufai Oseni has expressed dissatisfaction with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s performance during the governorship town hall debate held on Tuesday.
Speaking on ARISE Television’s Morning Show on Wednesday, Oseni said Adeleke spent much of the debate defending his administration and responding to various criticisms rather than presenting a clear vision for a second term.
According to the journalist, he did not see enough evidence of fresh ideas or a comprehensive plan for the governor’s proposed second term.
Rufai also criticised the overall performance of the governorship candidates, saying most of them failed to present compelling ideas capable of addressing the state’s major challenges.
He, however, singled out the candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) for what he considered a more detailed presentation on healthcare.
Oseni said:
“I felt like the candidates didn’t present bright ideas. All of them. And I felt it’s very lacklustre what Osun State is going to get, and I’m saying this across the board. I mean, I didn’t see the brightness of ideas.”
Commenting specifically on Adeleke’s performance, he said the governor appeared more focused on defending his record than outlining a broader vision for the future.
“Governor Adeleke was reacting to many things, trying to defend his administration, but I didn’t see a lot of brightness. I didn’t see a lot of vision. I saw more attacks.”
Oseni acknowledged that Adeleke highlighted some of his administration’s achievements, including the construction of about 350 kilometres of roads, but questioned whether the governor clearly articulated a long-term development agenda.
“The governor was defending his achievements, including a 350-kilometre road. But what is the grand vision?”
The journalist said the PRP candidate stood out to him for addressing the state’s healthcare challenges in greater detail.
According to Oseni, the candidate’s background as a medical doctor may have contributed to his understanding of the sector and his ability to outline proposed solutions.
“I think it was only the PRP candidate that put a finger on what was happening in the health sector, probably because he’s a medical doctor and because of what he said he was going to do to improve it.”
Oseni’s assessment comes as political parties intensify their campaigns ahead of the Osun governorship election, with candidates seeking to convince voters of their capacity to lead the state.
