BREAKING: UK Issues Fresh Travel Warning, Bans Citizens From 11 Nigerian States
The United Kingdom has issued a fresh travel advisory for its citizens visiting Nigeria, warning them against travelling to parts of 11 states due to security concerns.
The advisory was contained in the latest Nigeria travel guidance released by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
The UK also placed 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under a less severe category, advising British nationals to undertake only essential travel to those areas.
Under the updated advisory, the UK government warned against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe states in the North-East. Katsina and Zamfara states in the North-West were also listed among areas British citizens were advised to avoid completely.
In the South-South region, the stricter warning applies specifically to riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.
The affected locations include river and swamp communities that are accessible only by boat and have no road access.
Meanwhile, Bauchi State was placed under the category requiring only essential travel.
The same warning applies to Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto states in the North-West.
In the North-Central region, the advisory covers Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue states, with British nationals advised to travel to those locations only when necessary.
The Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja, was also placed under the all-but-essential travel category.
In the South-East, Abia, Anambra and Imo states were similarly listed under the essential-travel-only warning.
The advisory also covers parts of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states outside the riverine areas subject to the stricter travel restriction.
