Atiku–Obi Alliance: Umar Ardo Explains Why Former VP Cannot Step Down

Published

Political strategist and Convener of the League of Northern Democrats, Umar Ardo, has said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is unlikely to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race to form a coalition with Peter Obi.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE Television, Ardo argued that Atiku is unlikely to voluntarily step aside, although he would probably retain his support base if he chose to do so.

According to the political strategist, the situation is different for Peter Obi. While Obi may be more willing to step aside, Ardo said his supporters could refuse to follow his decision, creating a major obstacle to any potential alliance between the two opposition figures.

Ardo identified the contrasting positions of both politicians and the loyalty of their supporters as two major challenges that could prevent a successful merger ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He said Atiku does not appear inclined to voluntarily withdraw from the race, even though doing so would not necessarily cost him his support base.

“Then Peter Obi has the propensity to say, ‘I will step down.’ But if he says so, he will not have his support base. He will not be able to carry his support base. His support base will not go with him,” Ardo said.

He added that unless the two challenges are resolved, bringing the two political camps together would remain difficult.

However, Ardo maintained that even without a formal merger, either Atiku or Obi could potentially defeat the incumbent, depending on how effectively they approach the election.

He said both politicians individually have the capacity to challenge the existing political order and could win the 2027 presidential election if they adopt the right strategy.
