Arsenal midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has reportedly agreed to join Borussia Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the season as the German club seeks to provide the highly rated youngster with regular first-team football.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the 19-year-old is expected to travel to Germany for a medical after Arsenal and Dortmund reached an agreement over a temporary transfer that does not include an option to buy.

Dortmund are also expected to cover Nwaneri’s salary throughout the loan spell, with the Bundesliga side having maintained an interest in the England youth international for some time.

The move comes as Arsenal weigh up the benefits of giving Nwaneri more playing opportunities away from the Emirates Stadium. Competition for places in Mikel Arteta’s midfield has made regular first-team football increasingly difficult for the youngster.

Nwaneri has already made 51 senior appearances for Arsenal, scoring 10 goals. However, he was an unused substitute in the club’s opening league victory over Coventry and was subsequently left out of the squad for the 1-0 win against Aston Villa.

Dortmund reportedly intensified their pursuit of the midfielder after Giannis Konstantelias suffered a long-term knee injury, creating a need for additional options in midfield.

Nwaneri previously spent the second half of last season on loan at Marseille, where he made nine appearances and scored twice during a spell that provided him with valuable senior-level experience.

His move to Dortmund is expected to offer another opportunity to develop in a competitive European league while playing more regularly at senior level.

The youngster made history in September 2022 when he became the youngest player to feature in a Premier League match after making his Arsenal debut against Brentford at just 15 years, five months and 28 days.

Despite sanctioning the temporary move, Arsenal remain committed to Nwaneri’s long-term future. The absence of a purchase option in the agreement means the North London club will retain full control over the midfielder’s future beyond the loan spell.
