Patience Ozokwor Drops Powerful Parenting Advice: Don’t Shield Children From Struggle
Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has advised parents, particularly those from affluent backgrounds, to avoid over-pampering their children in an attempt to protect them from life’s challenges.
The actress gave the advice during a recent interview, where she explained that shielding children from every form of hardship could unintentionally prevent them from developing resilience, discipline and an appreciation for the privileges they enjoy.
According to Ozokwor, parents should not deliberately subject their children to suffering, but should allow them to experience manageable struggles and go through the process of learning how to overcome challenges.
“The fastest way to ruin a child’s life is to say you don’t want them to suffer the way you did. I’m not saying allow them to suffer. What I’m saying is allow them to struggle. Go through the process,” she said.
The veteran actress noted that children raised in wealthy homes may sometimes find it difficult to understand the sacrifices and hard work their parents put into acquiring their wealth and properties.
She illustrated her point by noting that children who grow up surrounded by several houses in different cities may struggle to appreciate the effort behind their family’s possessions because they did not witness the journey that produced them.
“When they don’t struggle, can you imagine you have, like, 20 houses? You have in Enugu, you have in Abuja, you have in Lagos. Your children will just be struggling, ‘Which one belongs to me?’ They don’t know how you struggled to get those things,” she added.
Ozokwor therefore urged parents to expose their children to responsibility and reasonable challenges rather than attempting to remove every obstacle from their path.
She stressed that allowing children to experience difficulties in a controlled and supportive environment could help them develop a stronger understanding of hard work, responsibility and the value of what they have.
Her comments have since generated discussions, with many Nigerians debating the importance of balancing parental support with discipline, independence and life experience.
