Tyson Fury Confirms Venue For Highly Anticipated Anthony Joshua Bout

Tyson Fury has announced that his highly anticipated heavyweight showdown with British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Fury revealed the venue on his Instagram page on Wednesday, September 2, sharing an image featuring himself and Joshua against the New York City skyline. Although he did not state a specific date, November 20 has reportedly emerged as the target date for the blockbuster encounter.

“What a place NYC, and what a venue MSG, and what a fight Fury vs AJ, the land of opportunity,” Fury wrote while describing the proposed event as an iconic weekend in New York.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Joshua and his promoter, Matchroom Boxing, had yet to publicly confirm the venue at the time of the announcement.

The decision to stage the all-British heavyweight clash in the United States follows months of negotiations involving Netflix and Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority.

Joshua’s camp had initially preferred the fight to be held in the United Kingdom, but negotiations shifted towards New York as organisers worked to finalise the financial terms of the bout.

Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn previously disclosed that Joshua’s team had concerns about staging the contest in the United States because of the potential impact of American taxes on the boxer’s net earnings.

“We don’t want to do the fight in the US, but we also understand it has to work for everybody,” Hearn said, adding that discussions were focused on addressing the financial implications.

Hearn explained that Joshua’s representatives had presented their terms and expected a decision to be reached during the week.

Fury’s announcement has already generated reactions among boxing fans, particularly those who expected the highly anticipated clash between the two British heavyweights to take place in the United Kingdom.

Some fans have questioned the decision to stage the bout in New York instead of a major British venue such as Wembley Stadium.

Fury, 36, has recorded 36 professional victories, with his only defeats coming against Oleksandr Usyk in their two encounters in 2024. He returned to the ring in July and secured a stoppage victory over Poland’s Mariusz Wach in a tune-up contest in Pattaya, Thailand.

Joshua also returned to action in July, defeating Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. His victory helped pave the way for renewed negotiations over the long-awaited clash with Fury.

Talks for a Fury-Joshua fight previously collapsed in 2021 after a United States judge ordered Fury to fulfil his contractual obligation to face Deontay Wilder in a third bout.

The latest development has now brought the long-awaited heavyweight showdown closer to reality, with attention turning to Joshua and his promotional team for official confirmation of the venue and fight arrangements.
