Gawuna’s Loyalists Dump NDC, Set To Return To APC In Kano

The Kano State chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) may be facing a major political realignment as prominent members and associates of its Kano Central senatorial candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, have reportedly begun moves to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The development gathered momentum on Tuesday night when a group of NDC figures and political loyalists associated with Gawuna visited Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and his deputy, Murtala Garo, during consultations over their political future.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the delegation used the meeting to express support for the NNPP-led administration in Kano and pledged to back initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and development of the state.

The delegation was led by Muhammad Umar, a close political associate of Gawuna, who said their consultations were motivated by their desire to contribute to the progress of Kano State.

Among those who attended the meeting were NDC State Vice Chairman Ali Datti Yako, Mansur Gawuna, Uba Mijinyawa, popularly known as Uba Danzainab, Aminu Faruk, Sani Jibrin, Salisu Muhammad, Musa Indabo, Muhammad Bala, Hassan Abdullahi and Abdurrahman Muhammad.

Governor Yusuf’s spokesman, Sunusi Tofa, confirmed the meeting in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Umar said the group was interested in supporting programmes and policies capable of improving the lives of residents, stressing that their priority was the development of Kano rather than partisan interests.

He explained that the ongoing consultations were intended to create opportunities for the group to work with the state leadership and contribute to projects and initiatives that would benefit the people.

Also speaking during the visit, NDC Vice Chairman Ali Datti Yako commended the Yusuf administration for what he described as visible efforts to transform Kano State.

Yako said the impact of the administration’s activities could be seen across different parts of the state, adding that the group had visited the governor and his deputy to demonstrate solidarity and support for their development efforts.

He expressed the belief that continued cooperation with the state government would contribute to further progress and improve the wellbeing of Kano residents.

The reported political movement comes against the backdrop of Gawuna’s political history in Kano. He served as deputy governor under former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and represented the APC during the fiercely contested 2023 governorship election, which he lost to Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The latest consultations have therefore fueled speculation that some members of Gawuna’s political camp could be preparing to leave the NDC and return to the APC as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum.
