Makinde Warns Oyo Monarchs: Stay Away From Politics Or Face Backlash

Published

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has warned traditional rulers across the state against interfering in partisan politics, stressing that traditional institutions must remain neutral and continue to serve as a unifying force for all citizens.

Makinde issued the warning on Saturday in Eruwa during the first coronation anniversary of Samuel Adegbola, the Eleruwa of Eruwa. The governor was also honoured with the chieftaincy title of Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland during the ceremony.

According to the governor, traditional rulers should maintain their positions as fathers to everyone and avoid taking sides in political matters. He cautioned that monarchs who choose to actively participate in politics risk losing the respect and confidence attached to their traditional positions.

Makinde said traditional institutions should embrace politicians across different parties as their children, rather than becoming involved in partisan activities.

He further warned that any traditional ruler who crosses into active politics should be prepared for criticism and verbal attacks from political actors.

Speaking about his presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 election, Makinde said he was prepared to embark on an extensive nationwide campaign to seek the support of Nigerians.

The governor, who is the presidential candidate of the Accord Party for the 2027 election, said his ambition was not limited to any particular geographical region and that he would engage citizens across the country to present his vision for Nigeria.

According to Makinde, his presidential campaign would involve travelling across different parts of the country and interacting directly with Nigerians as he seeks support for his ambition to lead the nation.
