Champions League History Made as Yaya Touré Achieves Groundbreaking African Feat

Former Ivory Coast international Yaya Touré has made history in European football after becoming the first African coach to lead a club into the UEFA Champions League league phase.

Touré achieved the landmark feat with Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava, who defeated Slovenian side NK Celje 2-1 after extra time in the second leg of their final qualifying tie to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory.

The result earned Slovan Bratislava a place among the 36 clubs competing in the Champions League league phase and marked a significant milestone in Touré’s emerging managerial career. Reports on the achievement confirm that the former Manchester City and Barcelona midfielder has broken new ground as an African coach on Europe’s biggest club stage.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Touré, who took charge of Slovan in June, has made an immediate impact in his first senior managerial appointment. The 43-year-old guided the Slovak champions through three qualifying rounds, overcoming Saburtalo of Georgia, Sweden’s Mjällby and finally Celje to secure their place in the competition.

Cristian Martinez scored the decisive goal in the 100th minute against Celje, giving Slovan the advantage and ultimately sealing their progression into the league phase.

Touré’s achievement represents another major milestone for African football. Before his breakthrough, Nigerian coach Ndubuisi Egbo had made history in 2020 by guiding Albanian club KF Tirana through the Champions League qualifying rounds, although his team did not reach the main competition.

The latest accomplishment also gives Touré an opportunity to experience the Champions League from a different perspective. He previously lifted the trophy as a player with Barcelona in 2009, but will now compete in the prestigious tournament from the touchline as a head coach.

Slovan Bratislava have been handed a challenging start to their league-phase campaign, with the club set to travel to Paris to face defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in their opening fixture.
