The death of Kano-based political commentator and social media personality, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, has sparked widespread reactions, with political figures, rights groups and other stakeholders calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Dan Shagamu was found dead at his residence in the Gaida area of Kano State after reportedly being attacked by assailants. His death has raised concerns among his followers and members of the public, particularly because of his outspoken political commentary on social media.

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, expressed deep concern over the incident and called on the Kano State Government to immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the commentator’s death.

Kwankwaso said Dan Shagamu was reportedly found in a pool of blood at his residence and described the incident as a horrific attack. He urged authorities to identify those responsible and ensure that they face justice.

The former governor further warned that if the authorities failed to conduct a decisive and transparent investigation, an incoming NDC administration would, upon assuming office, investigate the matter and take steps to hold those responsible accountable.

Kwankwaso also called on the state and Federal Governments to protect opposition voices and uphold citizens’ constitutional right to freedom of expression.

Amnesty International Nigeria also condemned the killing and demanded a thorough investigation. The organisation expressed concern over reports of politically related threats and intimidation ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that critics and outspoken citizens should be protected rather than targeted.

The Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Husaini Mai Riga, equally described Dan Shagamu’s death as disturbing and unacceptable. He called on the state government and security agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing, identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted.

Mai Riga also urged authorities to strengthen protection for journalists and media practitioners, noting that their role in promoting accountability and democracy should not expose them to intimidation or violence.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command has reportedly arrested two suspects in connection with the killing. According to the police, the suspects are currently being interrogated while forensic procedures and further investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and motive behind the attack.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has also directed security agencies, including the police and Department of State Services, to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible. The governor described the incident as shocking and unacceptable and appealed to residents to remain calm while the investigation continues.

Dan Shagamu was known for his social media commentary on political, religious and community issues and had built a significant following through his online activities. His death has continued to generate reactions from Nigerians who have called for justice and greater protection for journalists, commentators and other outspoken citizens.

The motive behind the killing remains under investigation, and the authorities have yet to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
