Arsenal Are Great — Allegri Hails Gunners After Napoli Champions League Defeat

Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri has described Arsenal as a “great team” after his side suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to the English club in their Champions League opener on Wednesday night.

Martin Odegaard scored the only goal of the encounter in the 75th minute at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, handing Arsenal all three points after a dominant display from the visitors.

Arsenal created several promising opportunities throughout the game before eventually finding the breakthrough. Bukayo Saka, Mikel Merino, Piero Hincapie and Noni Madueke were among those who came close to scoring but failed to convert their chances.

The Gunners’ dominance was reflected in the statistics, as they registered 26 shots compared with Napoli’s five. The Italian side also struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, recording an expected goals figure of only 0.22.

Arsenal’s defensive organisation further frustrated the hosts, with goalkeeper David Raya enjoying a relatively quiet evening as Napoli failed to consistently threaten his goal.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Allegri acknowledged that his team found it difficult to match Arsenal’s performance but praised the Premier League side for the quality they displayed.

“Arsenal are a great team. We needed to be patient in not conceding,” Allegri said, while noting that Napoli improved as the match progressed.

The Napoli manager admitted that his team could have performed better technically, particularly during the opening half, and said the club would need to analyse the mistakes that contributed to the defeat.

“We need to analyse our mistakes. The first half we could’ve done better on a technical level. But Arsenal put in a great performance to be able to score. They are a great side,” he added.

Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo also acknowledged Arsenal’s quality and urged his teammates to use the defeat as a learning experience.

“They are a fantastic side. We had some potential chances and could have done better. There are seven other games still,” Di Lorenzo said.

The defender stressed the importance of maintaining focus and working harder to avoid similar mistakes in the remaining Champions League fixtures.
