Kwankwaso Takes Fresh Swipe At Atiku, Tells Him To Focus On Traditional Role

Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has urged former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to reconsider his ambition to contest the 2027 presidential election, citing his age and health.

Kwankwaso made the appeal on Monday while speaking with members of the Fulani Farmers Association at his residence in Abuja. The former Kano State governor reportedly asked the group to convey his message to Atiku in Fulfulde, urging the former vice-president to focus on his traditional role as the Wazirin Adamawa.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Kwankwaso described Atiku as an elder statesman whose age and health should be taken into consideration as the 2027 presidential race gathers momentum. He appealed to those present to visit the former vice-president and encourage him to step aside from the contest.

Kwankwaso, who is the running mate to NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi, also promised that he and Obi would continue to support Atiku if they emerge victorious in the 2027 presidential election.

He said their administration would ensure that Atiku, whom he described as an elder, continued to receive the necessary respect and support, particularly because of his roots in Adamawa State.

Atiku has remained a prominent figure in Nigerian politics for several decades and has contested the presidency on multiple occasions. The former vice-president has previously sought the presidency under different political platforms, including his unsuccessful bids in 2007, 2019 and 2023.

In April, Atiku reportedly stated that the 2027 presidential election would be his final attempt at becoming Nigeria’s president. He is expected to be 81 years old in 2027.

Kwankwaso’s latest comments come amid growing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures and political blocs intensifying discussions over possible alliances and presidential candidates.
