He’s The Don Now — Carragher Hails Arteta After Arsenal’s Controversial Penalty Win

Published

Jamie Carragher has compared Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson, describing the Spaniard as one of the most influential managers in the Premier League following his strong criticism of a penalty decision during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Arsenal maintained their perfect start to the season with a hard-fought win on Saturday, although Arteta was unhappy with referee John Brooks’ decision to award Sunderland a second-half penalty.

Brooks pointed to the spot after Sunderland defender Dan Ballard went down following contact with Arsenal’s Ezri Konsa. However, the resulting penalty was saved by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, who turned Enzo Le Fee’s effort onto the post.

Despite the penalty being missed, Arteta strongly criticised the decision after the match, describing it as unacceptable and repeatedly returning to the incident during his post-match press conference.

Carragher believes Arteta’s reaction is similar to the approach Ferguson used during his highly successful Manchester United reign, when the former Scottish manager frequently challenged refereeing decisions and sought to influence the narrative surrounding his team.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher said Arteta was now occupying a position of power in the Premier League and had the authority to make his voice heard.

Carragher argued that Arteta’s status as a long-serving and successful manager means his public criticism of refereeing decisions carries significant weight. He also suggested that the Arsenal boss was deliberately keeping the penalty controversy in the spotlight to ensure similar decisions do not go against his team in the future.

The former Liverpool defender further compared Arteta’s management style to that of Ferguson and former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, both of whom were known for publicly defending their teams and applying pressure through their comments.

Former Luton Town and Wolves manager Rob Edwards also agreed with Carragher’s assessment, saying Arteta has established himself as a powerful voice in English football.

Edwards noted that people are more likely to listen to Arteta because of his achievements and status as a Premier League-winning manager, adding that the Arsenal boss appears determined to protect his players and football club.

The comparison to Ferguson highlights the growing influence Arteta has developed at Arsenal after several years in charge, with Carragher suggesting that the Spaniard is increasingly becoming a major force both on and off the pitch.
