OPay Clears The Air Over Alleged Plan To Stop Using Phone Numbers As Account Numbers

Published

OPay has dismissed a social media claim suggesting that it has stopped using customers’ phone numbers as account numbers and switched entirely to standard bank account numbers.

The claim, which circulated on social media, urged customers whose OPay account numbers are linked to their phone numbers to visit OPay agents and obtain new standard account numbers.

According to Bush Radio Academy, an OPay official who spoke on condition of anonymity described the claim as inaccurate and said the company would communicate any major changes to its account system through its official channels.

“I have seen the tweet. But even from the comments, you will see people are already correcting him. If we have any update or news, we will always share through our communication channels,” the official said.

The clarification followed a post by an X user, Israel Gharee, who claimed that OPay had stopped using phone numbers as account numbers and advised customers to visit agents to have their accounts updated.

According to OPay, the confusion may have been linked to its My BizPayment feature, which provides eligible users with a separate merchant account number for business transactions.

The feature allows existing OPay customers who use the platform for business purposes to provide information about their businesses and, after completing the required process, obtain a merchant account number. The existence of such an account number does not mean that OPay has discontinued phone-number-based account details for regular customers.

OPay has also clarified that there is no instruction requiring ordinary customers to visit agents to replace their existing phone-number-based account details.

The latest clarification comes weeks after the fintech company dismissed another viral claim that it would suspend its operations from September 1, 2026. OPay said at the time that its services would continue and urged customers to rely on its official communication channels for authentic information.

The company has therefore advised customers to verify information concerning their accounts through its official channels and avoid acting on unverified social media claims.
