Greece Stun Klopp’s Germany In Historic Nations League Upset

Jurgen Klopp’s search for his first victory as Germany head coach suffered another setback as Greece secured a historic 1-0 Nations League victory over the hosts in Augsburg.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Klopp was taking charge of Germany for only the second time after his debut ended in a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands on Thursday. Despite Germany controlling large portions of the game and enjoying significant possession, the hosts struggled to create the decisive chances needed to find the breakthrough.

Greece, meanwhile, remained disciplined and eventually secured a memorable victory through Dimitrios Kourbelis. The midfielder opened the scoring in the 74th minute when his effort from the edge of the penalty area took a significant deflection off Joshua Kimmich before beating the goalkeeper.

Klopp responded by introducing Florian Wirtz as Germany searched for an equaliser, but the hosts were unable to break through Greece’s defence before the final whistle.

The result marked a historic achievement for Greece, who had never defeated Germany in their previous 10 meetings. Germany had won seven of those encounters, while the other three ended in draws.

Greece, ranked 41st in the world, also returned to the top of Nations League Group 2 after previously defeating Serbia on Thursday.

Klopp admitted his disappointment after the defeat but said Germany’s new-look squad would require time to develop under his management. The former Liverpool manager acknowledged that although the result was frustrating, building a new team would be a gradual process.

Klopp was appointed Germany head coach on a four-year contract in July, replacing Julian Nagelsmann. The defeat means Germany have now gone four matches without a victory since beating Ivory Coast in their second group game at this summer’s World Cup.

For Greece, the victory represented another significant milestone and their biggest win over a higher-ranked opponent since their famous victory against England at Wembley in 2024, when the Three Lions were ranked fourth in the world.
