June 12 Hero Ralph Obioha D!es, Nigeria Loses Prominent Democracy Activist
Chief Ralph Obioha, a prominent pro-democracy activist, businessman and former lawmaker associated with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), has died.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Obioha became widely recognised during Nigeria’s political crisis in the 1990s for his role in the struggle against military rule and the campaign for the restoration of democracy following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
During the period of military rule, Obioha operated from Canada and the United States, where he worked alongside other pro-democracy activists to mobilise international support for the restoration of the democratic mandate believed to have been secured through the June 12 election.
His political career dated back to the Second Republic, during which he served as a member of the House of Representatives. He later founded the Justice Party, which participated in the 2003 presidential election with Reverend Chris Okotie as its candidate.
Obioha also played a role in the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, where he served as chairman of its Caretaker Committee and was involved in efforts to advance the interests of the Igbo people and the South-East region.
His contributions to Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement were formally recognised in June 2026 when President Bola Tinubu conferred a national honour on him alongside other Nigerians who played notable roles in the June 12 struggle.
The honour acknowledged Obioha’s contributions to the campaign for democratic governance and the sacrifices he made during the years of military rule.
His death marks the loss of a notable figure whose political career spanned the Second Republic, the military era and Nigeria’s return to democratic rule.
