The accident reportedly occurred on Sunday along the Ikare route after the vehicle negotiated a hilly section of the university community.

The driver, who appeared shaken by the incident, told Hope Newspaper that he was travelling to Abuja when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to somersault into the ditch.

“I was on my way to Abuja when the car somersaulted into the ditch,” he said.

An eyewitness, Kayode Abodunrin, alleged that an 18-seater Hiace bus struck the Toyota Camry as it somersaulted into the excavation. He added that the bus driver allegedly fled the scene immediately after the incident.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the accident has renewed concerns among residents and road users over safety measures at the construction site, where contractors are working on a dual carriageway project.

Some passers-by blamed the contractors, alleging that excavated sections of the road had been left uncovered without adequate warning signs or protective barriers to alert motorists to the danger.

They called on the construction company to urgently improve safety measures around the site to prevent further accidents and protect road users.

A resident identified simply as Lekan alleged that at least five people had died in accidents linked to the condition of the road.

“We have lost no fewer than five people because of what is happening here,” he said, urging the contractors not to leave excavated areas exposed without sufficient warning signs or protective measures.

The incident has heightened calls for improved road safety management around ongoing construction projects in the area, with residents urging the relevant authorities and contractors to address the reported hazards before another tragedy occurs.
