The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), identified as Onoja Samuel, for allegedly firing gunshots during a disagreement with traders at Kubwa Market in Abuja.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, disclosed the arrest while addressing journalists at the command on Wednesday.

Sanusi said the police received a distress call reporting that a man was firing shots into the air at Kubwa Market, located in the Bwari Area Council of the FCT. Officers attached to the Kubwa Division were subsequently deployed to the scene, where they arrested the suspect.

The police commissioner explained that preliminary investigations identified Samuel as a Deputy Superintendent of Corps (DSC) with the NSCDC.

According to Sanusi, the officer allegedly arrived at the market armed with a pistol following claims that some traders had assaulted his wife. A disagreement reportedly ensued between him and the traders, during which he allegedly fired several shots into the air.

“During the ensuing argument with the traders, Onoja Samuel, who is a DSC with the NSCDC, fired several shots into the air,” the commissioner said.

Sanusi disclosed that police officers recovered a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition from the suspect following his arrest.

He added that Samuel remained in police custody and would be charged in court after the conclusion of investigations into the incident.

The police commissioner also called on personnel of other security agencies operating in the FCT to exercise restraint and ensure proper coordination with the police before carrying out authorised operations within their areas of responsibility.

He stressed that effective communication and cooperation among security agencies were essential to preventing confrontations, maintaining public order and safeguarding peace across the territory.
