The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair and credible general elections in Nigeria in 2027, assuring citizens and the international community that the administration of President Bola Tinubu will respect the democratic process.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance during an interview with TRT World on the sidelines of the TRT World Forum 2026 in Istanbul, Türkiye. The forum, which commenced on Friday, November 6, is themed “A World Without a Centre: Who Leads When the Rules Run Out?”

According to Bush Radio Academy, Idris said the Tinubu administration would provide the necessary support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) while respecting the commission’s constitutional independence.

He explained that the government would continue to create an enabling environment for INEC to perform its responsibilities effectively, stressing that the choices of Nigerian voters must be respected.

“Let me assure Nigerians and the international community that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is fully committed to free, fair and credible elections in 2027. We will continue to support the democratic process and ensure that the will of the Nigerian people prevails,” the minister said.

Addressing concerns about the possible impact of insecurity on the 2027 general elections, Idris said the government was strengthening security measures to protect the electoral process and ensure citizens could participate without fear.

He disclosed that the administration was recruiting additional military personnel and acquiring new equipment to improve the operational capacity of the armed forces.

The minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting political participation and press freedom, describing freedom of expression as a fundamental pillar of democracy.

However, he cautioned against the spread of fake news and misinformation as political activities gather momentum ahead of the elections. He urged Nigerians, political actors and media organisations to verify information before publishing or sharing it, warning that false reports could increase tensions and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

Idris further discussed the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence in journalism and governance, acknowledging its potential to improve communication and public service delivery.

He nevertheless warned that the technology could be misused to produce deepfake videos and other misleading content capable of deceiving the public, stressing the importance of responsible use as the country approaches another election season.
