LAGOS, Nigeria – In a surprising turn of events, the Department of State Services (DSS) has taken Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), back into custody despite a ruling from the Federal High Court in Lagos.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo had earlier granted bail to Emefiele, who pleaded not guilty to two counts of alleged illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. However, the court mandated that Emefiele should be remanded in prison until he fulfils his bail conditions.

But the court’s decision sparked a physical confrontation between officials of the DSS and the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCoS). Both security agencies had presented themselves at the court with intentions to move Emefiele into their custody.

This confrontation escalated quickly, resulting in a tense standoff as both the DSS and NCoS insisted on taking Emefiele into their respective custody, contravening the court’s directive that he should be remanded in a prison facility.

Minutes after the altercation, DSS officials succeeded in whisking the suspended apex bank governor away from the court premises. This blatant disregard for the court order has caused quite a stir, triggering debates on the operational boundaries of Nigeria’s security agencies.

This incident is seen as a significant development in the ongoing case of the suspended Central Bank Governor, highlighting not only the legal issues Emefiele faces but also potential systemic issues in the relationship between Nigeria’s judicial system and its security agencies. Future proceedings in this high-profile case are anticipated to draw significant attention as the public waits to see how the judiciary and security agencies handle this complex situation.
