Mr. Oshoala admitted that he had reservations about his daughter’s future in sports and had set ambitious goals for all his children to excel academically beyond their parents’ achievements, telling the BBC: “We didn’t see a bright future for her in football.”

Despite her father’s initial objections, Asisat Oshoala tenaciously pursued her dream and secured her first professional contract with the Nigerian local women’s club, Robo, in 2009. Later, she ventured into European football by joining Liverpool in 2015 before moving to China to play for Dalian Quanjian in 2017.

However, it was in China that the 28-year-old Nigerian forward truly unleashed her football potential, capturing the attention of FC Barcelona, who signed her on loan in 2019 and then permanently a few months later.

Since then, Asisat Oshoala has garnered an impressive collection of accolades, including three Primera División titles, two UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, three Supercopa de España Femenina titles, and three Copa de la Reina titles.

Furthermore, her contributions to the Super Falcons of Nigeria have been invaluable, helping them secure three African Women’s Championships. She has also earned five African Women’s Footballer of the Year awards and achieved the remarkable distinction of becoming the first African woman to score in three different Women’s World Cup editions.

Additionally, Asisat Oshoala made history as the first and only African woman player to be nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or.

Despite her outstanding achievements, Asisat faced some controversy when she celebrated passionately after scoring a goal against Australia in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. This celebration, which involved removing her jersey, garnered mixed reactions across Nigeria, with her father expressing pride in her emotional display.

Asisat Oshoala is currently leading the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the 2023 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and Australia, and she is expected to play a crucial role when Nigeria faces the Lionesses of England in the round of 16 stage. The match will take place at Suncorp Stadium in Milton, Australia, on Monday, August 7, at 8:30 a.m.
