Sanusi’s visit coincided with Niger’s military authorities rejecting a peace mission involving representatives from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN).

ECOWAS reported that the diplomatic attempts were called off following a late-night communication from Niger’s military authorities, indicating their inability to receive the delegation.

Additionally, Victoria Nuland, the United States Acting Deputy Secretary of State, was denied authorization to meet with Tiani or with the deposed President Mohamed Bazoum. Instead, she engaged in a two-hour conversation with other army officers.
