The size of this new government is approximately half that of its predecessor. The cabinet will be led by Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, who was appointed as the Prime Minister on the previous Tuesday.

This development emerges as leaders from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) prepare to convene in Abuja to deliberate on the unfolding crisis in the landlocked West African nation.

ECOWAS, in a statement issued on Monday, had conveyed that “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) leaders will be assessing the political situation and recent events in Niger during the summit.”

Following ECOWAS’s seven-day ultimatum for the junta to reinstate the deposed President Bazoum, uncertainty has arisen since the deadline lapsed on Sunday.

There has been ongoing speculation regarding the potential involvement of ECOWAS in restoring democracy in Niger, including the consideration of military intervention as a last resort.
