Ogbonnia, a former presidential aspirant within the APC, penned a statement reminding President Biden of his historic speech in 1986, opposing apartheid in South Africa and urging the US to be part of the solution rather than the problem.
According to SaharaReporters, Ogbonnia sent the letter from his residence in Texas.
In the letter, dated August 21, 2023, titled “Dear President Biden, Tchiani Is a Lesser Evil Than Tinubu,” Ogbonnia argued that the decision to invade Niger could lead to a political catastrophe of significant proportions.
He compared this potential move to the ill-fated decision to invade Iraq in 2002 under President George W. Bush’s leadership. Ogbonnia claimed that supporting ECOWAS, led by Tinubu, to invade Niger would be a grave error.
Ogbonnia emphasized that the apparent support for Tinubu’s leadership within ECOWAS contradicts the principles and values upheld by the United States under President Joe Biden.
He noted the similarities between Tinubu’s rise to power and certain coup d’état scenarios. Ogbonnia also drew a parallel to the January 6, 2021 incident in the United States when then-President Donald Trump attempted to maintain power against the democratic norms of incumbency.
