Kwankwaso’s expulsion was officially announced in a statement released by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Abdulsalam Abdulrasaq, on Tuesday. Abdulrasaq clarified that the decision to expel Kwankwaso immediately was made after he failed to appear before the disciplinary panel to address the allegations against him.
Kwankwaso’s expulsion caused divisions within the party, with members from various opposition groups pointing fingers at each other.
A recent investigation by Saturday PUNCH uncovered a subtle effort by the Kwankwaso faction to amend the party’s logo and constitution, purportedly to weaken the influence of NNPP’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam.
Although Johnson, who chaired the disciplinary committee responsible for expelling some factional members a few weeks ago, confirmed this development, he denied that it was in response to the emergence of a faction within the NNPP.
“No, it has nothing to do with any faction. It was something we had already discussed at the NEC. Unlike them (Agbo faction), we are serious people. But we haven’t changed the logo yet. We are planning to open it up for our members to propose and contribute ideas,” he explained.
In response, Major Agbo, the acting National Chairman of the faction, acknowledged their awareness of this subtle move, which they believe is aimed at stripping the founder of his immunity.
He stated, “Clearly, the proposed amendment to the constitution and the change of logo they are discussing was deliberate.
This is because they suddenly realized that the person they are targeting (the founder) enjoys immunity as per the current constitution. Hence, they are in a rush to amend it.”
