Reuters reported that following his suspension in June, Emefiele tendered his resignation. In a twist, he first submitted the letter to the Department of State Services (DSS), which, citing legal protocols, rejected it. The law stipulates that such a letter should be directed solely to the president.

His resignation has subsequently paved the way for Yemi Cardoso’s nomination as the new CBN governor, thereby dispelling any legal ambiguities around the transition. The authority to dismiss a CBN governor doesn’t rest solely with the president. The Central Bank Act of 2007 clarifies that while the president can propose the removal, a two-thirds senate majority must back this proposition. Without this majority or in the absence of a criminal conviction from a competent court, the CBN governor retains the right to resign, but must furnish a three-month notice in writing to the president.

With all these revelations, the nation and indeed the financial sector are left with a pressing question: Did Emefiele quietly step down?

Yes.
