Soyinka claimed that Atiku and Obi played a significant role in this outcome by contesting the election separately, with Atiku representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Obi running on the Labour Party ticket.
In his statement from Stellenbosch, South Africa, released on Saturday, Soyinka dismissed the insinuations made by supporters of opposition political parties, including the PDP and LP, who contend that Tinubu, running under the All Progressives Congress (APC), did not secure victory.
Soyinka emphasized that the recent Nigerian elections should not be perceived as an adversarial contest but rather as a scenario where political parties divided their strength, resulting in Tinubu’s victory.
He highlighted that when a political party splits so close to an election, the ballot tally reflects a voluntary donation of electoral success rather than a fierce competition.
Soyinka also alluded to the potential for post-election dynamics, suggesting that the outcome may continue to evolve due to shifts in political alliances or sentiments of regret.
He referenced a particular interview, known as the Datti interview, as a precursor to possible changes in the political landscape.
Ultimately, Soyinka pointed out that the Supreme Court would have the final say on the matter, emphasizing that Peter Obi did not win the 2023 Nigerian elections and that he and Atiku effectively donated the electoral outcome even before the voting took place.
Soyinka urged politicians and their associates to take responsibility for the consequences of their choices within the democratic framework.
Earlier in the week, he had stated that Peter Obi’s party secured the third position, not even second, in the election, and that efforts were being made to manipulate the narrative through misinformation.
