While standing confidently on the podium, the pastor used a basic chemistry experiment to, what many believe, deceive his unsuspecting audience. For those familiar with the world of science, the technique was immediately recognizable. Here’s how he reportedly pulled off the stunt:

He began by filling a bottle with water and adding a few drops of phenolphthalein, which, on its own, does not change the color of the water.
Then, he discreetly taped some sodium carbonate to the inner side of the bottle’s cap.
After sealing the bottle, he left it undisturbed for a few moments.
Finally, with a dramatic flourish, he shook the bottle. As the water reached the cap, it dissolved the sodium carbonate. When the sodium carbonate mixed with the phenolphthalein in the water, the solution turned a deep pink, mimicking the color of wine.

For those not in the know, phenolphthalein undergoes a color change in the presence of a base or alkali. Sodium carbonate acts as a base in this reaction, triggering the color transformation. CONTINUE READING
