This statement was issued by the party’s spokesperson, Mr. Bemgba Iortyom, in response to a directive from Governor Alia’s media aide, Asortar James.

The directive from the governor’s media aide urged internet users to report only verified stories about killings carried out by herdsmen and bandits in the state.

It mentioned the establishment of social media committees in all local government areas to review all reports of insecurity submitted by citizens before they can be shared publicly, warning of consequences for those who defy the instructions.

Mr. Iortyom argued that the media aide’s understanding of the situation was flawed, emphasizing that neither he nor the governor possesses the authority to legislate regulations governing social media usage.

He clarified that in Nigeria, the power to create laws rests with the legislative bodies at different levels, and media practice regulation falls under the jurisdiction of the National Assembly.

Iortyom emphasized, “The media aide has no powers to regulate the use of social media. If he strongly disagrees with anyone’s actions on social media, he can pursue legal action through the appropriate channels, as only the courts have the authority to determine what is acceptable or not in accordance with the law.”

Furthermore, he underscored the significance of citizens reporting on the ongoing killings throughout the state, especially since Governor Alia rarely addresses these incidents, despite their daily occurrence.

Iortyom noted that although the governor may not favor using propaganda to address insecurity, the people’s silence in the face of oppression only emboldens their oppressors.

He affirmed that Benue residents will continue to use any available means to draw attention to the crimes committed against them by bandits and terrorists, and no assertive aide can prevent them from doing so.
