Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has issued an apology on behalf of the military, denying accusations of ethnic cleansing in the wake of the accidental bombing in Tudun Biri, Kaduna State. The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, resulted in the death of at least 85 villagers, with 66 individuals hospitalized due to the unintended strike by a Nigerian Airforce drone.

Musa, addressing the nation on Arise News, assured Nigerians that a thorough investigation would be conducted, and corrective measures implemented. He emphasized that the military’s primary duty is to protect civilians and not to cause harm, expressing deep regret over the tragic incident.

Responding to claims by the Arewa group, suggesting that the bombing was a deliberate attack based on ethnic differences, Musa vehemently denied such allegations. He stated, “Mistakes do happen. It has nothing to do with tribe, religion, or ethnicity. Anybody with that kind of thought is not being truthful and sincere about it.”

Musa acknowledged the emotional reactions fueled by incomplete information and affirmed the military’s commitment to address the mistakes and prevent similar incidents in the future. He called for a more precise approach in military operations.

The Defence Chief also called for an upgrade in the military budget, commending the commitment shown by the Tinubu regime. He highlighted the challenges of acquiring equipment due to budget constraints and the need for domestic production to ensure self-sufficiency.

Musa stated, “As a country of over 200 million, we must develop our military constructions or else we will be held accountable. Now, even with your money you cannot go off the shelf to get the equipment that you need; you have to order and wait to get them in.”

He emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of terrorism and called for a holistic, all-government approach to eradicate the menace. Musa concluded by stressing the need for unity and collaboration to collectively combat terrorism and ensure the security and well-being of the nation.
