Details presented in court suggest that Adebayo confronted the 36-year-old Surajudeen over an undisclosed issue, leading to a quarrel. In the course of the altercation, Adebayo allegedly resorted to violence, using a knife to fatally stab his colleague. The cause of the quarrel remains undisclosed.
Tragically, despite being rushed to the Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, Surajudeen was pronounced dead on arrival by a medical professional on duty. The incident is said to have occurred on November 19, 2023, in Ilaje, Ajah, Lagos State, around 1:29 pm.
Chekwube Okeh, the police prosecutor, informed the court that the defendant’s actions contravene Section 222 and are punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The charge against Adebayo specified that he “did unlawfully kill one Shonibare Surajudeen ‘m’ aged 36 years, by stabbing him with a knife.”
The defendant did not enter a plea, and Okeh requested the court to remand Adebayo in a correctional center pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. Magistrate Balogun, acceding to the prosecutor’s plea, remanded the defendant to the Kirikiri Correctional Centre until the DPP provides legal advice. The case has been adjourned until January 22, 2024, awaiting further developments.
