Abbas acknowledged Gbajabiamila’s remarkable 20-year tenure in the House of Representatives and emphasized his significance not only to Surulere but also to the nation’s legislative body as a whole. He commended Gbajabiamila’s diverse roles, ranging from minority whip and minority leader to majority leader and ultimately, Speaker until the previous year. Abbas contended that filling the shoes left by Gbajabiamila would be an arduous task for any politician in the foreseeable future.
Highlighting Gbajabiamila’s extensive contributions, Abbas inaugurated several projects sponsored by his predecessor, including the National Open University of Nigeria Surulere Campus, the rehabilitated Randle Street, the refurbished Bode Thomas Police Station, and the Femi Gbajabiamila Mini Stadium, Orile. Notably, the Speaker publicly endorsed Fuad Laguda, the All Progressives Congress candidate, as Gbajabiamila’s replacement in the upcoming by-election.
Expressing confidence in Laguda’s candidacy, Abbas believes that the multitude of projects initiated by Gbajabiamila will sway the constituents of Surulere Constituency 1 to vote for Laguda in the by-election, scheduled to fill the vacant seat left by Gbajabiamila upon assuming the role of Chief of Staff to the President.
Gbajabiamila, an alumnus of the University of Lagos, explained his motivation for sponsoring the construction of the 484-bed hall, citing a need to address the accommodation deficit at the institution. The Chief of Staff to the President emphasized the potential impact of inadequate accommodation on students’ performance, underscoring the importance of constructing new residence halls.
In response, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folashade Ogunshola, expressed gratitude for Gbajabiamila’s contribution and highlighted the significance of the new hostel in alleviating the school’s accommodation challenges. Despite acknowledging Gbajabiamila’s support, Ogunshola emphasized the university’s ongoing need for assistance from the Federal Government to upgrade its facilities.
