The health workers raised issues such as a shortage of manpower and claimed exclusion from the 2023 promotion within the institution. During their peaceful demonstration on the hospital premises, they emphasized their determination to take more assertive actions if their grievances were not addressed promptly.
The protesting nurses, displaying solidarity through songs and placards with messages like “Stop Selective Promotion,” “Nurses Workload is Enough for Promotion,” and “Nurses’ Lives Matter,” drew attention to their plight. The National President of NANNM, Michael Nnachi, had previously expressed concern about the loss of over 75,000 nurses to better opportunities abroad due to inadequate wages and unfavorable working conditions in Nigeria.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Olufimilola Adekunle, the chairman of the FMC Abeokuta chapter of NANNM, revealed that more than 200 nurses from the hospital had relocated abroad. She pointed out that the remaining less than 300 nurses were struggling to manage the influx of patients visiting the hospital daily, leading to exhaustion and overwork.
Adekunle emphasized the urgent need for government intervention, asserting that nurses deserve fair compensation and recognition for their contributions. She warned that if their concerns were not addressed, the next course of action would be a work stoppage.
In response to the protest, Dr. Kunle Adediran, the Head of Clinical Services at the hospital, explained that the issue of promotions was not solely within the management’s control. He clarified that the promotion of nurses is contingent on directives from the Federal Ministry of Health. Despite this, he assured the protesters that the hospital would communicate the situation to the Federal Government.
The nurses’ demands underscore the critical need for addressing systemic issues affecting healthcare workers, including adequate staffing, fair compensation, and conducive working environments to ensure the well-being of both medical professionals and patients.
