In an interview on Channels Television, IBB disclosed his efforts to befriend Fawehinmi during his tenure in power, emphasizing that despite his attempts, the renowned activist remained aloof. Babangida expressed his admiration for Fawehinmi, describing him as a good critic, but acknowledged the reluctance on Fawehinmi’s part to associate with someone perceived negatively.

“He (Fawehinmi) is a good critic, and he doesn’t want to be seen with someone that people already perceived as ‘an evil genius,’” IBB explained. IBB reminisced about the futile attempts made by one of his ministers, the late Alex Akinyele, to bridge the gap between him and Fawehinmi. He recounted their shared attempts to foster a friendship but noted that Fawehinmi resisted due to the negative public perception.

Reflecting on his appreciation for Fawehinmi’s intellect, IBB admitted that he valued the late activist’s perspectives.
