In November 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari faced a harrowing experience when his plane, en route to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta, encountered severe turbulence. The turbulent conditions persisted for an extended period, causing deep concern among the occupants of the presidential jet, including President Buhari and his aides. Upon landing in Malta, a visibly shaken Buhari reportedly queried the pilot about the alarming nature of the landing. The president’s question, “What kind of landing is this?” prompted an immediate apology from the pilot, who explained that they had experienced a phenomenon known as wind shear—a sudden change in wind direction.

The book describes the frightening sequence of events, detailing how the Boeing 737 business jet, just seconds away from touching down, encountered intense buffeting from all sides. The aircraft swayed perilously and, upon landing, exhibited erratic movements, likened to that of a drunken sailor.

Chapter 21 of the book, titled “Over 50 foreign trips… and a health scare,” provides insight into President Buhari’s extensive international travels during his eight-year tenure. The list of official visits includes 94 countries, with the highest number of trips recorded in 2016 (19 trips), followed by 18 in 2022, 16 in 2015, and 12 in 2018.

Notably, the book highlights the least number of trips undertaken by Buhari in 2020, totaling only two. The former leader made 10 trips in 2019, five each in 2021 and 2023, before ultimately retiring to his hometown of Daura in Katsina on May 29, 2023. The disclosure of this near-crash incident adds a gripping dimension to the narrative of President Buhari’s eventful presidency and his extensive diplomatic engagements on the global stage.
