Simultaneously, the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martins Amaewhule, voted to override Governor Siminalayi Fubara and successfully passed four bills into law. These bills encompass the Rivers Local Government Amendment Law, the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Amendment Law, the Rivers State Advertisement and Use of State-Owned Property Prohibition repeal law, and the Rivers State Funds Management and Financial Autonomy Law.

The Assembly’s decision was based on Section 100 subsection 5 of the constitution, which stipulates that the governor’s assent is not required if the bill is passed again by a two-thirds majority after the governor withholds assent.

Amaewhule accused the governor of lacking plans for local government elections in the state. This development occurred just 24 hours after the Supreme Court upheld Governor Fubara’s election.

The Assembly, led by Amaewhule, consists of 27 members loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while four members, formerly under Edison Ehie’s leadership, are loyal to Governor Fubara.

President Bola Tinubu intervened in the political crisis, which revolves around the conflict between Fubara and Wike. This intervention resulted in the signing of an eight-point resolution (peace accord) by the concerned parties to bring an end to the crisis.
