According to investigations by The PUNCH, Idowu had attended the coronation anniversary and was later summoned to a meeting at Eniola’s residence along Inisa Road in Ejigbo. Eyewitnesses, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the meeting included a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Ayodele Asalu, and another individual named Mr. Timothy.
After the meeting concluded, as the attendees were leaving, gunshots were heard, resulting in Idowu being hit on the leg. He succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Ejigbo. Afiz Lawal, a Personal Assistant to the deceased who witnessed the incident, recounted that Prince Eniola had instructed the firing of gunshots into the air but, unfortunately, the shot was directed towards the ground, fatally injuring Idowu.
Lawal expressed uncertainty about whether the incident was intentional or accidental but detailed the sequence of events. The spokesperson for the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, was unavailable for comment, and there has been no response from her.
Following the tragedy, the alleged shooter was reportedly beaten to death, although this information could not be confirmed. The Commander of Osun Command of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service, Ahmed Nureni, denied any involvement of the local hunters in the incident and called for a thorough investigation.
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered an immediate investigation into the killing and counter-killing, expressing condolences to the families affected. The governor urged law enforcement agencies to probe the incident thoroughly and take necessary actions. He also dispatched a high-powered delegation to Ejigbo to restore calm and prevent potential reprisals or violence. The delegation includes the Commissioner of Police, the State Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs, the State Commissioner for Information, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security. Governor Adeleke emphasized the need for guidelines on the use of local guns to enhance public safety, especially during public functions.
