In a strategic move reflecting the evolving dynamics of the global oil market, Dangote Refinery is gearing up to import crude oil from the United States in the coming months, signaling a shift in the competitive landscape of American barrels on the global stage. READ FULL ARTICLE HERE
According to reports from Bloomberg, sources familiar with the matter revealed that Trafigura Group has secured a deal to supply 2 million barrels of WTI Midland to Dangote Refinery, with delivery expected by the end of February. This development marks the first instance of the refinery procuring non-Nigerian crude.
The surge in US oil supply over the past decade has significantly reshaped the international oil market, extending its influence to regions such as Asia. Nigeria, whose economy is heavily reliant on petroleum exports, finds itself particularly affected by the growing presence of transatlantic oil deliveries.
The newly operational Dangote Refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, commenced operations earlier this month. Initially targeting a processing rate of 350,000 barrels per day, the refinery aims to incrementally increase production toward its full capacity.
While the refinery primarily sources domestic crude through a supply agreement with the trading arm of the state-owned NNPCL, the recent agreement with Trafigura Group marks a diversification into international sources. The facility has already received shipments of Nigeria’s Agbami crude, facilitated by a trading unit of Shell, along with subsequent deliveries of Nigeria’s Amenam, Bonny Light, and CJ Blend streams.
In addition to handling domestic feedstock, the recently inaugurated mega-facility is equipped to process various African crudes, as well as supplies from distant sources such as the United States and Saudi Arabia, as disclosed by the Dangote Group earlier this month.
Nigeria’s Challenges in Crude Oil Production
Nigeria has grappled with challenges in crude oil production in recent years, stemming from issues such as crude oil theft, divestment from oil majors, and insecurity across the Niger Delta. The country has struggled to meet its OPEC production quota of 1.75 million barrels per day (mbpd) for 2023, leading the oil cartel to cut its production quota for 2024. Dangote Refinery’s decision to diversify its crude oil sources may be attributed to Nigeria’s inconsistent crude oil production levels.
