This plea comes in response to the recent decision by the administration of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, to withhold examinations from students who have not fully settled their school fees.
NANS, through its president, Lucky Emonefe, expressed concern over this development, particularly in light of the current economic challenges faced by many Nigerians. The student body urged the University Management of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, to reconsider its stance and explore alternative solutions that do not discriminate against students based on their financial status.
The student organization highlighted the worrisome nature of the policy, emphasizing that numerous students and their families are grappling with financial difficulties, making it impractical for them to afford the full payment at once. NANS pointed out that by depriving students of the opportunity to take their exams, their academic prospects are put at risk, directly contradicting the principle of equal access to education.
NANS appealed to the Minister of Education to intervene in the matter, urging a nationwide commitment to fair and inclusive policies concerning school fees and examinations in all tertiary institutions. Emphasizing the significance of education in national development, the statement underscored the need for every student to have an equal chance to succeed.
The student body concluded by asserting that education is a fundamental right, and every student should be provided with the opportunity to excel academically, irrespective of their financial circumstances. It called on the University Management of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, to reconsider its decision, promoting alternative measures that uphold fairness and inclusivity in education.
