A shocking revelation from the audited financial statement of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) spanning 16 months has brought widespread condemnation, unveiling an allocation of approximately N266 billion for staff salaries and an astonishing N268 billion earmarked for security purposes. The jaw-dropping annual security expenditure of the NNPCL has raised eyebrows, amounting to a sum that could single-handedly acquire all pharmaceutical companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), leaving a staggering surplus of no less than N80 billion.

Nigerians have expressed profound dismay and indignation at the apparent mismanagement of funds by the NNPC, with many demanding greater transparency and accountability from the state-owned corporation.

“This level of financial mismanagement is utterly unacceptable,” exclaimed Adeola Ogunleye, a concerned citizen. “At a time when the nation is grappling with economic challenges, such reckless spending reflects a blatant disregard for the welfare of the Nigerian people.”

Others have called for a thorough investigation into the NNPC’s financial practices, urging regulatory authorities to hold accountable those responsible for the alleged squandering of public funds.

“The NNPC must be held to the highest standards of fiscal responsibility,” asserted Ibrahim Abdullahi, a financial analyst. “The misallocation of such significant sums underscores the urgent need for greater oversight and governance reforms within the corporation.”
