Court Pronounces Death Sentence For Woman Who Killed Enugu Makeup Artist

Ijeoma Nneke went missing on November 11, 2020, after leaving home for a job. Her mutilated corpse was discovered around Maryland in Enugu metropolis on November 16, leading to the arrest and arraignment of Ifezue and her brother, Chukwuemeka, on charges of conspiracy and murder in 2022.

During the trial, Chukwuemeka was discharged following a no-case submission, with the judge finding no evidence of his participation in the crime. However, the court determined that the prosecution had proven the murder case against Ifezue beyond a reasonable doubt.

The court concurred with the prosecution’s arguments, led by Chinelo Chigbo, and held Ifezue responsible for the death of the makeup artist. Consequently, Chiamaka Ifezue was sentenced to death by hanging.

Police exhibits, including currency, mobile phones, makeup tools, and the key to a Toyota Metrix car allegedly used in transporting the deceased’s body, were presented during the trial. Sgt. Udeze Oguguo, a police officer attached to the Independence Layout Police Division in Enugu, provided evidence and tendered exhibits recovered from the crime scene.

The court also received hard copies of WhatsApp and text messages exchanged by the deceased with her fiancé and a friend at the scene of the crime. The exhibits formed crucial pieces of evidence in establishing Ifezue’s guilt in the murder case.
