Oyo State Authorities Announce Legal Action Against Three Suspects Linked To Ibadan Explosion

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has received the official report on the January 16 explosion in the Old Bodija area of Ibadan, which resulted in five fatalities, 77 injuries, and the destruction of 58 houses. The report, encompassing findings from medical, security, and engineering teams established by the government, has identified three individuals linked to the incident. Owoseni, a retired Commissioner of Police, explained that a Closed Circuit Television in one of the affected houses captured the incident, confirming that the explosion, triggered by an electric spark, involved a known explosive type called ‘Water Gel Type Based Explosive.’ Emphasizing the government’s commitment to holding the perpetrators accountable, he stated that the immigration status of individuals involved, mainly from Mali, would be verified.

Contrary to earlier reports, Owoseni clarified that the incident occurred on Aderinola Street, not Dejo Oyelese Street. He commended the swift deployment of security to the epicenter, maintaining the overall security of the environment and preventing opportunistic crimes. The Emergency Operation Centre, established by the governor, has compiled data on affected houses, casualties, and losses suffered, with 335 individuals and entities registering at the center as of February 3.

Owoseni highlighted an Executive Order signed by the governor, obligating those dealing with explosives to report within 72 hours, but noted that no one had come forward by the deadline. The ongoing phase requires anyone in possession of harmful substances to declare to the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security within 24 hours.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Institute of Structural Engineers, Mbim Okutinyang, reported that his team assessed 282 houses, recommending the demolition of only four due to severe damage, pending the awaited seismic report. The Head of the Emergency Operation Centre, Temitope Alonge, disclosed that 80 victims were managed across various hospitals, with five patients remaining admitted at the time of the press conference, four of whom were recovering from injuries sustained during the explosion, while one was undergoing treatment for a spinal cord injury at the Redeemers Hospital.
