The call from Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano aligns with previous remarks by former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, suggesting that the New Nigeria People’s Party in Kano might review the actions taken by Ganduje regarding the Kano emirate.

However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned against any disruption to the existing emirate arrangement, emphasizing the potential disturbance to the peace in the ancient city of Kano. The opposition party advised NNPP Governor Abba Yusuf to exercise caution and avoid actions that could jeopardize the prevailing peaceful coexistence in the state.

Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano presented a letter dated February 5, 2024, to the Speaker of Kano State House of Assembly, copying the Kano State Governor, Deputy Governor, and Secretary to the State Government. In the letter, the group argued that dissolving the emirates and reinstating the former Emir of Kano would enhance unity, peace, and stability within Kano State and neighboring communities.

The group specifically called for a review of the law governing the additional emirates, expressing the belief that consolidating them into a single entity would promote greater unity and progress. They acknowledged the authority of the Kano State House of Assembly in emirate management but urged a reconsideration of the decision to remove HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from the throne.

According to the group, Sanusi, a highly respected figure, demonstrated commitment to the well-being of the people during his tenure as Emir, working towards social and economic development, education, healthcare, and improved living standards. They argued that his removal had caused division and unrest in Kano State.

In response, the Publicity Secretary of the APC in Kano State, Alhaji Ahmad Aruwa, dismissed the group’s demands as “fairy tales” and emphasized the positive impact of creating the new emirates. Aruwa cautioned against actions that could disturb the peace in Kano.

The NNPP, represented by Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, stated that everyone is entitled to their opinion, acknowledging the group’s right to express their views.

The background to the current situation involves the former Governor Ganduje signing a law in 2019 that split the Kano emirate into five, leading to the creation of four new emirates. Subsequently, Sanusi was dethroned in March 2020 and banished to Nasarawa State, with reasons cited as his disrespect for lawful instructions and persistent refusal to attend official meetings and programs organized by the government.
