Njoku explained that the herdsman, his customer, visited his shop on December 13, 2023, with a sizable herd of cattle, impressing him. Seeking a loan of N50,000, Njoku was surprised when the herder proposed a job opportunity in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, instead. The task involved bagging manure, promising earnings of N30,000 to N40,000 in just four days.

Desperate for funds to stock his shop for the festive season, Njoku accepted the offer. He claimed that he became involved in the kidnapping operation out of fear for his life, as the herders allegedly threatened him. Furthermore, he suggested that his inclusion in the criminal activity might be an attempt to portray that Igbos, too, were involved in kidnapping, not just Fulani herdsmen in the southeast region.

Njoku recounted being taken to a thick forest, where the herder’s brothers joined them. The herder returned armed with a gun and a piece of cloth, revealing the true nature of their criminal intentions. Confessing to a kidnapping operation that targeted returnees from the United States during the Yuletide celebration, Njoku disclosed that they received a ransom of N40 million in both naira and dollars. However, he denied any involvement in causing harm to the victims, attributing the death of a lady in captivity to fear rather than intentional harm by the gang.
