President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, emphasized the need for social media regulation, branding it a societal menace during the public presentation of the book, “Nigerian Public Discourse: The Interplay of Empirical Evidence and Hyperbole” by Minister for Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola. According to a statement by Tunde Alao, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Gbajabiamila stressed that people often underestimate the far-reaching impact of their online communications, highlighting the capacity to reach millions globally. He cautioned that this could lead to unintended consequences, including threats to societal well-being and the security of individuals.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, supported the call for social media regulation. Hamzat emphasized the importance of accurate data for addressing the nation’s challenges and facilitating evidence-based decision-making. He pointed out the lack of comprehensive data as a hindrance to policy formulation for national development.

Gbajabiamila reiterated the government’s obligation to engage citizens in evidence-based discussions and data-reliant decision-making. He praised the author, Fashola, for encapsulating his experiences as a former governor and federal executive council member in a book. Tinubu’s administration aims for accurate data to facilitate better policy execution and formulation.

In response to the push for social media regulation, a statement by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in October 2023 urged the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to reject the proposed social media regulation bill. SERAP argued that the bill would unduly restrict freedom of expression and privacy. Additionally, they called on Tinubu’s administration to cease efforts compelling technological firms to restrict fundamental human rights on online platforms such as Google and YouTube.
