The demise of Peter Yunana, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who passed away during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match between Nigeria and South Africa, evoked deep emotions among his colleagues and students in Yola, Adamawa State. Tragically, Yunana, like several other Nigerians, lost his life due to the tension surrounding the AFCON semifinal match. While watching the game, he suddenly slumped and passed away. His body, slated for burial in Makarfi, Kaduna State, was transported out of Yola on Saturday, with a procession of NYSC colleagues, GSS students, and staff accompanying him.

As the ambulance carrying Yunana made its way from Yola to Makarfi, a significant number of people gathered at the Numan bridge along the Yola-Gombe highway to bid a somber farewell. Among those present were NYSC colleagues, GSS students and staff, and government officials, including the Secretary of Numan Local Government, David Belu Afremond.

The late Yunana, registered for NYSC on November 1, 2023, and was scheduled for discharge on October 31, 2024. His untimely death has left a void in the community, especially among the students and colleagues he interacted with during his service at GSS Numan. The tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictable circumstances that can unfold even during seemingly routine events.
