Professor Joy Ezeilo, the Dean Emeritus of the Faculty of Law at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, with a monthly income of N420,000 as an academic, was taken aback upon realizing she would have to shell out a staggering N2.1 million for a flight to Ivory Coast to witness the Super Eagles in the AFCON Finale. Expressing her disbelief upon receiving the flight fare details from her trusted travel agent, Professor Ezeilo shared her sentiments:
“I had envisioned the thrill of experiencing AFCON 2024 live and inquired about flights to Abidjan to witness our Super Eagles in the finals. Given the proximity of Ivory Coast (just an hour and 35 minutes away), I didn’t anticipate exorbitant costs. However, my travel agent of over two decades sent me a shocking quote of N2,183,000.00. Doing the math, I realized it would take my entire five months’ salary as a Professor of Law, at the pinnacle of my professional journey, to afford a round-trip ticket to a West African country. This is a stark reflection of our current economic challenges.”
Professor Ezeilo requested refraining from converting the amount to US dollars, emphasizing the demoralizing reality it represents for a full professor. She expressed concern that such financial barriers might divert the ambitions of the bright young minds they are mentoring away from academia towards political pursuits.
In light of the financial setback, she outlined an alternative plan, intending to cut down on expenses. She mentioned recharging her DSTV for N19,800 and buying twenty liters of fuel for power generation due to the lack of electricity during the Semifinals. The match holds significant importance for her as a source of solace amid Nigeria’s challenges.
Professor Ezeilo also addressed public inquiries about financial assistance, explaining that despite recently receiving her salary, it has been committed to settling arrears. She urged patience and expressed hope for the disbursement of the 8-month arrears from the ASUU strike or a potential wage increase through negotiations between NLC and FGN.
In closing, she extended her best wishes to the Super Eagles and assured them of her thoughts and prayers. The message concluded with a resilient proclamation: “The struggle continues
