Reports indicate that the incident unfolded when the squad descended on the market in pursuit of an individual who was reported to have urinated in a restricted area and sought refuge within the market premises.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the operatives fired indiscriminately for over two hours within the market, prompting traders to flee in panic. The ensuing chaos resulted in the destruction and looting of merchandise.
Upon visiting the scene the following day, a trader identified as Okonkwo recounted the harrowing events, stating, “Yesterday was a black Friday in this market; the operatives killed a man simply because he urinated along the Onitsha-Asaba Expressway.”
He continued, “After urinating, the boy ran into the market as the operatives chased him. When they entered the market, they started shooting. This caused pandemonium in the market as many sellers and buyers sustained severe injuries while scrambling to safety.”
“Stray bullets hit two people who were later rushed to the hospital. The victims, who sell drugs at Ogboogwu market, suffered injuries. Additionally, people’s goods were destroyed and looted. They sealed our toilets and started collecting money from anyone they saw urinating outside. This is the cause of the problem.”
In response to inquiries, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident. He stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, has ordered an investigation into the matter.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Adeoye has ordered the immediate transfer of a reported murder incident that happened at the head bridge market by 4:30 pm on Friday,” Ikenga said. “Our officers, led by the DPO head bridge, on receipt of the information, moved to the scene and saw a young man in a pool of blood while another was injured.”
“The victims were rushed to the hospital, where the doctor confirmed one dead. The police also recovered six expended cartridges from the scene. Further details shall be communicated, please,” he added.
In a related incident from December 2023, similar pandemonium occurred along the Onitsha-Owerri Road by Obodoukwu Junction, Onitsha, when a stray bullet, suspected to be from gun-wielding individuals in black jackets believed to be operatives of the Anambra State Anti-touts Agency, claimed the life of a young man identified as Chimezie from Achina, Aguata Local Government Area of the state. The victim was standing on the balcony of his residence when the stray bullet struck him. Chimezie had recently completed his mandatory one-year national service at the time.
