NAN’s investigation reveals that the current cost of a 50-cl PET bottle of various soft drink brands has soared to N300, up from N150 in 2023. Additionally, alcoholic beverages, including canned beer, have experienced price hikes from N400 to N700, while a can of malt drink has risen from N250 to N400. The intoxicant business has witnessed a nearly 100% price increment from N350 to N600 during the same period.
Market players such as Mrs. Mercy Igalawuye, a supermarket operator, report a substantial 30% drop in sales, emphasizing the urgent need for government intervention to address inflationary pressures. Mrs. Igalawuye urges a holistic review of the national economy to alleviate the financial strain on consumers.
Vendor Mr. Seun Asaolu notes the adverse impact on daily sales, with a reported reduction of approximately 50%. The fluctuating prices pose challenges for event planners, vendors, and clients, causing disruptions in quoting and purchasing for future events.
Distributor Mrs. Ngozi Ogbunachara confirms both price increases and a drop in sales, citing minimal profit margins due to elevated costs from bottling companies. The number of retailers on credit has surged by about 50% compared to the same period in 2023, highlighting the need for government intervention to reduce costs of essential commodities.
Hawker Mrs. Fikayo Obalolorun attributes a decline in sales to the prevailing hot weather, seeking immediate solutions to economic challenges affecting the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria also reports a headline inflation of 29.90% for January 2024, a 0.98% increase from December 2023’s 28.92%.
